Fiber-optic cables use glass or plastic fibers to transmit data. These cables are capable of transmitting data at speeds 1,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection.

The Delaware Area SuperHighway (DASH), a public-private consortium formed to advance the goal of a fiber-optic cable network in Delaware County, got a boost last week from the Delaware County Commissioners with the support of Delaware Mayor Windell Wheeler.  According to the Delaware Gazette, officials will now begin putting out for bid projects to design and install a publicly-funded fiber-optic network.

At Monday’s joint session of the Delaware County Commissioners and Delaware City Council, Commissioner Todd Hanks cited fiber as the “4th utility” in addition to electricity, water, and sewer.  Mayor Wheeler added that fiber is an important part of positioning both the city and county for economic development.

As Commissioner Hanks mentioned in last week’s video, Delaware County offers excellent transportati0n infrastructure for residents and businesses alike.  In addition to excellent local roads, proximity to major roadways, and access to rail systems, Delaware County is also host to the Delaware Municpial Airport.  The airport is convenienty situated in the heart of Delaware’s industrial sector and complements the many nearby businesses, factories, warehouses and offices.

  • Fiber Optic Infrastructure in Delaware County

Plans are afoot to further develop a network of high-speed fiber optic cables in Delaware County.  As the Delaware Gazette reported earlier in May, the Delaware County Commissioners are considering expansion of fiber infrastructure in the county to connect the Greif Park business development in Liberty Township to other fiber networks, in Delaware and/or in Worthington.

Add to this the DASH (Delaware Area SuperHighway) consortium the City of Delaware, OhioHealth, and Consolidated Electric formed in 2006.  Since the creation of DASH, the group has put approximately 2 miles of fiber optic cable in the ground.  This infrastructure is immensely valuable not only for business attraction and retention, but also for use by government services.

At a recent Delaware County Commissioners meeting, County Economic Development Director Gus Comstock said, “If we want to attract the best businesses to town, we need fiber, fiber, fiber.  Fiber’s what’s going to draw the best businesses.”  He’s absolutely right.  Development of fiber infrastructure will make Delaware County attractive to new high-tech businesses.
